Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network

BCAN has been monitoring the drug shortage of Bacille Calmette-Guerin or BCG, an intravesical immunotherapy drug typically used to prevent recurrences in patients who have high grade tumors or who have CIS or T1 disease.  The shortage arose when Sanofi, one of the two licensed US suppliers of BCG, ceased production of the product because of manufacturing issues.  Merck, the other supplier of BCG in the U.S., has increased its production of BCG to try to meet the demand. On learning of the shortage BCAN immediately wrote to the FDA  urging the agency to take all actions necessary to resolve this dangerous drug shortage as soon as possible –click here to see the full content of the letter. We received a prompt response from the FDA, telling us that the leadership of its Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER) is actively engaged in addressing this serious problem. BCAN will stay in contact with the FDA and will keep you apprised of any further developments.  In the meantime, the FDA and BCAN want to hear from you if you are told by your physician that you will not be able to receive your BCG treatment because of this drug shortage . Please report your situation to the FDA by emailing CBERshortage@fda.hhs.gov or calling(301) 827-4239, and report to BCAN atinfo@bcan.org.

Macmillan Cancer Support

We are a source of support, helping with all the things that people affected by cancer want and need. It's not only patients who live with cancer, we also helpcarers, families and communities. We guide people through the system, supporting them every step of the way. We fund nurses and other specialist health care professionals and build cancer care centres. But we give so much more than medical help.

People need practical support at home, so we provide anything from some precious time off for a carer, to a lift to hospital. People need emotional support, so we listen, advise and share information through our cancer support specialists, website and trained professionals. People need financial help to cope with the extra costs cancer can bring, so we give benefits advice, and grants for anything from heating bills to travel costs. Together we listen, we learn, we act to help people live with cancer.

The Italian Society of Uro-Oncology (S.I.Ur.O.) is a ‘non profit’ organization that was founded in 1990 by Francesco Boccardo, Mario Cappellini, Franco Di Silverio, Luciano Giuliani, Giuseppe Martorana, Alberto Pellegrini, Giorgio Pizzocaro, Salvatore Rocca Rossetti, Leonardo Santi, Enzo Usai and Vito Vitale.

Founder members ‘s goal was to establish a free and unsectarian organization that is in the position of promoting the multidisciplinary approach to the management of patients suffering from urologic tumors.

In particular, the Association aims to promote the growth of a ‘new’ specialist who while working in its original branch of medicine at the same time aims to break the attitudinal, cultural and operational barriers of its branch and to develop specific interest and skills in the field of urologic diseases through constant training.

In accordance with these principles, urologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists and, more in general, specialists with such interests over the last ten years have had the opportunity to compare their own knowledge and their own professional experience and to develop a common cultural heritage which has led to the institutionalization and validation of collaborative projects (multi-specialized protocols, multidisciplinary clinics, etc.) that are steadily spreading within the health services of our country.
